Bio

Jennifer’s research aims to understand the functional roles of intergenic lncRNAs using a combination of experimental and computational approaches. Her interest in lncRNAs stemmed from her PhD at the University of Oxford, where she studied the role of lncRNAs in disease and development with Chris Ponting and Ana. Her and colleagues specifically identified a lncRNA that posttranscriptionally regulates a key proteincoding gene, whose expression level is disrupted in spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 by acting as a microRNA (miRNA) decoy (Tan et al 2014, Nat. Struct. Mol. Biol.). They also found that this type of miRNAdependent mechanism is prevalent, and likely functions to maintain pluripotency in embryonic stem cells (Tan et al 2015, Genome Res).

Currently, Jennifer is working to investigate the contribution of lncRNAs to diseases and to characterize their potential functional roles and the biological mechanisms underlying them.
