DARIS survey of qualitative data producers and users 2012

DARIS conducted a survey of researchers who work with qualitative data in Switzerland. The purpose was to assess the qualitative research practices and views of researchers that are relevant to the sharing and re-use of qualitative data. Our brief report on the results can be found here.

Swiss PISA data at DARIS

All Swiss data from PISA are now available at DARIS for use by researchers. This international survey, which evaluates the acquistion of knowledge and know-how essential for daily life at the end of obligatory education, is carried out every three years since 2000 in OECD member countries and in numerous partner countries. SERSCIDA survey

DARIS is a participating member of the consortium SERSCIDA, an FP7 project to establish social science data archives in the Western Balkans. As part of the project, researchers are currently being asked to complete an online survey on their research practices, needs, and opinions about data sharing. European Social Survey 2010 on NESSTAR
The Swiss data of the ESS (European Social Survey) 2010 are now available online, on our NESSTAR server. Beyond a core of questions re-asked for each edition, the 2010 survey addressed perceptions of order and justice, as well as the relationship between work and family.

European Social Survey 2008 on NESSTAR
The Swiss data of the European Social Survey (ESS) 2008 are now available online on our NESSTAR server. Beyond a core of questions repeated for each edition, the 2008 survey notably addressed attitudes towards different age groups as well the perception of public policies.

The Dynamics of Value Change in Switzerland: Causes and Consequences
World Values Survey - 2007
The Swiss part of the World Values Survey, which takes place in more than 50 countries, was conducted, following the 1989 and 1996 editions, for the third time in 2007. In this representative survey, the social, economic, and political values of the adult population were examined in individual interviews. The project focused on the evolution of values in Switzerland, the specificities of change in relation to other countries, and the political consequences.

Volunteer Work in Educational and Religious Adminstrative Bodies in the Canton of Zurich
Two written surveys, conducted by the ETH Zurich, addressed volunteer work, with focus on schools and churches. The purpose was on the one hand to learn more about the motivations, attitudes, and assessments of volunteer activities, and on the other hand to better understand the possibilities and conditions of volunteer work within the Swiss system.

New Selects data available online
The survey panel data from 1999 and 2003 are now accessible online, via our NESSTAR server. Plus, data from the complementary 2007 survey (postal or online) have been added to the already available telephone survey data from that year.

Security 2010
The "Security" series describes the trends and tendancies of opinion among the Swiss population regarding security, defense, and foreign policy, based on a representative survey. Besides the questions asked each year, the following topics were addressed in 2010: approval of objectives with respect to security and defense policy, attitudes toward foreign engagements and their importance, promotion of peace by the army and civil service. Other themes of interest include the prestige and perception of the military training of officers, as well as approval of military traditions.

Political analysis of federal legislative activity 1983-2007
The project of Wolf Linder et al. of the University of Bern examines legislative activity in the form of an inventory of national and international legal acts in place between 1983 and 2007, methodologically inspired from a former project by Linder on the development of Swiss laws from 1947 to 1982. The data document a period of 25 years and offer a solid basis for answering current analytical questions with the help of statistical research data on Swiss politics and Parliament that is available today.

A neglected phenomenon: the changing mission of day care centers in the face of diversifying family conditions
This project, led by the University of applied science in social work and health (EESP) in the canton of Vaud, aims to better understand the family conditions of those using day care cetners and to assess the types of parent requests addressed to educators of young children. The perception of these conditions by personnel in education and the manner in which they address them are also examined.

Swiss volunteer work 2010
A national study of Swiss volunteer work was carried out for the second time in 2010, under the direction of Markus Freitag. It follows a first study done in 2006 and provides current data on the diversity of forms of volunteer work in Switzerland. Beyond the replication and the development of principal indicators from the first wave, the recent edition contains information on the motives and the potential for mobilisation of volunteer activities.

People on War UK survey 2007
To mark the 30th anniversary of the Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions, the International Committee of the Red Cross repeated in the United Kingdom the 1999 People on War survey conducted in 17 countries. Key questions from the 1999 survey were asked to a representative sample of 1,000 people, to observe changes in British public opinion.

Parliamentary Decisions: Electoral considerations, party pressure and strategic calculations
This research project, led by the University of Zurich under the guidance of Stefanie Bailer and Simon Hug, examines the voting behavior of Swiss parlementarians. The survey addresses principally the influence of personal political preferences, party pressure, and the preferences of constituents on the voting decisions of parliament members in the Swiss Lower House. Also examined are strategic voting behaviours in the case of complex voting agendas with various options.

Health behaviours of Swiss students 2006
The Swiss data of the survey "Health Behaviour in School-aged Children" (HBSC) 2006 are now available. This international study, conducted every fourth year under the aegis of the World Health Organisation, has been conducted in Switzerland since 1986 by Swiss Addiction Info (formerly ISPA). The data from the five preceding waves are also available from our catalogue, together constituting a rich source of information on the evolution of health behaviours of Swiss students, and allowing comparisons with different participating countries.

Security 2009
The "Security" series describes the currents and tendancies of Swiss public opinion on foreign, security, and defense policy, by way of a representative survey. Besides the questions asked each year, the following themes were addressed in 2009: acceptance of measures aimed at guaranteeing domestic security, perception of threat of different events, approval of diverse forms of collaboration with the armies of other European states, arguments on the necessity of the Swiss army, preferences concerning the form of recruitment, and the services and efficiency of the Swiss army.

LifE-Studie: Lebensverläufe von der späten Kindheit ins frühe Erwachsenenalter
This research project from the Universities of Zurich, Constance, and Potsdam examined, in a continuation of the longitudinal study "Entwicklung im Jugendalter" (1979 to 1983), the life course and psychosocial development of 1,500 individuals age 12 to 35, in the city and region of Frankfurt. The data constitute a valuable basis for studying problems related to pedagogy, sociology of the family, education, as well as psychological development. They allow thematic and interdisciplinary analysis of the developmental processes in play during the passage to adulthood from a new expanse.
