Following the success of the first six editions hosted by departments of Law or Statistics, the Institute of Forensic Science (School of Criminal Justice) of the University of Lausanne is proud to organize the Seventh International Conference on Forensic Inference and Statistics - ICFIS 08.

The aim of the symposium is to bring together the diverse scientific communities involved in the various aspects of forensic interpretation and statistics (statisticians, forensic scientists, attorneys, members of the judiciary, and others with an interest in quantitative methods and law).

The conference will be held on the Lausanne University Campus from Thursday, 21st August to Saturday, 23rd August, 2008.

Taking advantage of the forensic science facilities, the conference organizers will offer three introductory workshops on the 20th of August, on respectively forensic DNA analysis, fingerprint identification and Bayesian networks in forensic science.

The following three-day symposium will cover the main topics of:

  • > Recent trends in DNA statistics and the use of DNA databases
  • > The evolving statistical status of fingerprint evidence and of other traditional forensic disciplines
  • > The use of graphical models

Detailed conference themes

Oral and poster sessions will be structured partly around topics suggested by contributed papers. Suitable topics include the following non-exhaustive list:

  • > DNA evidence interpretation (DNA, mtDNA, Y-chromosome analysis and contact DNA);
  • > Pattern matching evidence (i.e. fingerprints, footwear marks, earprints, questioned documents, toolmarks and firearms);
  • > Interpretation of transfer evidence (such as glass, paint, soil, pollen and fibres);
  • > Statistics and new forensic technologies: forensic speaker recognition, face recognition, mobile phone geo-mapping, computer forensics;
  • > Statistical issues relating to forensic databases and forensic intelligence;
  • > Computational statistics applied in forensic science
  • > Role and duties of the expert witness regarding statistical evidence;
  • > Judge and jury comprehension;
  • > Legal theory;
  • > Graphical and probabilistic analyses of evidence (e.g. probabilistic networks);
  • > Damage assessment;
  • > Discrimination litigation;
  • > Environmental regulations and legislation;
  • > Epidemiology and toxicology in judicial and administrative proceedings.

The Scientific Committee will offer an award for the best poster presentation.
