The conservation of species and biodiversity represents a major challenge for our society. Both a scientifically rigorous approach and technical expertise are required to address such complex problems. In this context, the science of conservation biology was developed through the integration of various disciplines. This science encompasses the creation and application of analytical tools for conservation management, and is ultimately concerned with the protection of vulnerable species and the restoration of disturbed ecosystems.
The Laboratory for Conservation Biology (LCB) is a specialised unit of the Department of Ecology and Evolution of the University of Lausanne, oriented towards the applied sciences. The LCB includes several research programs in the fields of molecular genetics and natural populations management. Its location within an academic institution gives access to the high-tech skills and resources required for such research. Moreover collaboration with fundamental research allows rapid exploitation of the most recent breakthroughs for the practical needs of conservation biology. Indeed, the presence within the same laboratory of a network of ecologists and conservation geneticists allows the development of management tools that integrate geographic, demographic and genetic factors into management solutions.
The services of the LCB are intended for environmental managers in general, and for all organisations concerned with the management and conservation of biodiversity including:
governmental agencies
conservation organisations
private and commercial entities
academic societies
forensic and custom agencies concerned with international treaties for the protection of animal and plant species
