We find ourselves in a garden. A garden like one we've never known. A garden where as much that is hidden is revealed. Mrs. Violet Venable summons Catherine, her 'dead husband's niece', from the asylum where she has been kept in order to keep her silent, to the garden to tell the story of the death of Violet's son Sebastian. Throughout the course of the play we learn many disturbing things about the relationships of the people in the garden. We don't know who or what to believe. Is Violet hiding something? Is Catherine telling the truth? Does Dr. Cukrowicz (a Polish word that means 'sugar', so we call him 'Dr. Sugar') want to harm or help Catherine?
Tennessee Williams has created a world in which we are confronted with many taboos and a world in which reality and truth are left to the interpretation of the spectator.
The Sun & Moon Theater Company is working its way through this intriguing parable and promises to offer a version that is sure to raise some eye brows as well as pique the imagination.
After all, it is: "a hideous story but it's a true story of our time and the world we live in".
