=== Biological & technical background ===
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is an essential set of cell surface proteins that allows the immune system to recognize foreign molecules on the surface of virus-infected or cancer cells. In human populations, there are thousands of variants of MHCs and understanding their differences is key to predict their function and the disease susceptibility of different individuals. Using mathematical tools (mainly probabilities) to analyse large experimental datasets, we will show how we can uncover several properties of MHC molecule interactions and how this can inform us about the key properties of these molecules in immune mechanisms to fight diseases.

Le complexe majeur d'histocompatibilité (MHC) est un ensemble essentiel des protéines de surface cellulaire qui permet au système immunitaire de reconnaître les molécules étrangères tel que les virus ou cellules cancéreuses. Dans la population humaine, il y a des milliers de variantes de MHC et l'analyse de ces variantes est la clé pour prédire leur rôle dans les différentes maladies. En utilisant des outils mathématiques pour analyser les grands ensembles de données expérimentales, nous allons montrer comment nous pouvons découvrir plusieurs propriétés d'interactions entre le MHC et les peptides présents dans le corps humain. Nous découvrions comment le corps ce défend en présence de cellules cancéreuse et virales.

En utilisant des outils mathématiques pour analyser les grands ensembles de données expérimentales, nous allons montrer comment nous pouvons découvrir plusieurs propriétés d'interactions entre le MHC et les peptides présents dans le corps humain. === Methods ===
The students will get familiar to protein sequence analysis (conservation, entropy and mutual information), as well as basic principles of protein structure and interaction analysis in medically relevant cases (cancer + viral infection).
The students will use implemented software available on web portails and R.

Les élèves se familiariseront à l'analyse de séquences de protéiques (conservation , entropie et l'information mutuelle ), ainsi qu'aux théories fondamentales pour analyser la structure des protéines et leurs interactions dans le contexte médical (cancer + infection virale).
Les élèves utiliseront des logiciels disponibles sur le portail Web et R.

=== Things to be learned from this ===
The project will overall offer experience in R coding, comparative genomics, bioinformatics and information theory.

Le projet permettra au étudiants d'apprendre  la génomique comparative , la bioinformatique et  la théorie de l'information. Il leur permettra également d'apprendre à coder en R.
