Au bord d’un précipice, au milieu des glaces, le guide Joseph Marie Couttet escaladant une paroi de glace pour atteindre le Grand Mulet, dans le massif du Mont Blanc; derrière lui, l'abîme. Deux alpinistes assurant la corde et d’autres attendant d’effectuer à leur tour l’ascension.
