plasma membrane

The membrane surrounding a cell that separates the cell from its external environment. It consists of a phospholipid bilayer and associated proteins.

intracellular

The living contents of a cell; the matter contained within (but not including) the plasma membrane, usually taken to exclude large vacuoles and masses of secretory or ingested material. In eukaryotes it includes the nucleus and cytoplasm.

cell fraction

A generic term for parts of cells prepared by disruptive biochemical techniques.

membrane

Double layer of lipid molecules that encloses all cells, and, in eukaryotes, many organelles; may be a single or double lipid bilayer; also includes associated proteins.

cellular_component

cytoplasm

All of the contents of a cell excluding the plasma membrane and nucleus, but including other subcellular structures.

cell surface

The external part of the cell wall and/or plasma membrane.

endomembrane system

A collection of membranous structures involved in transport within the cell. The main components of the endomembrane system are endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, vesicles, cell membrane and nuclear envelope. Members of the endomembrane system pass materials through each other or though the use of vesicles.

cytoplasmic membrane-bounded vesicle

A membrane-bounded vesicle found in the cytoplasm of the cell.

organelle membrane

The lipid bilayer surrounding an organelle.

cytoplasmic vesicle

A vesicle formed of membrane or protein, found in the cytoplasm of a cell.

nuclear membrane

Either of the lipid bilayers that surround the nucleus and form the nuclear envelope; excludes the intermembrane space.
